Familiar Information

Name: Kiki
Species: Red Crown Crane
Gender: Female

Personality
Patient | Curious | Tired | Aloof | Dutiful

Many years ago, a crane appeared in the gardens of the Master's compound. Untamable, the crane was fondly referred to as Kiki to the apprentices and citizens of Isoba, who viewed her appearance so deep in the tunnels as good luck. Since Hikira was a child, she made it her business to 'befriend' the animal. Kiki retains her somewhat distant personality, but with the apprentices and master, she is cordial. She is found at the compound and rarely travels with Hikira when she leaves Isoba.

Details
• Permission can be granted for anyone in Isoba to use Kiki to deliver letters to Nariah and other settlements
• Will only let Hikira or her apprentices approach
• feeds off the insects and young koi that can be found in the magic gardens

|| Personality ||

Type: ENFP (Leaning towards an INFP)
Alignment: Neutral Good
Drive: Family and Tradition

Positive
Ambitious | Quick Learner | Leader | Bold | Energetic | Dedicated

Nothing can stop Hikira once she has her mind set on something. It comes from an internal drive she can't quite place. It pushes her to learn fast, and gives her a strong, confident personality. She likes to be the one giving directions, but this is also a weakness, since she doesn't like asking for help. She is never afraid to speak her mind as needed. Her passions and dedication for smithing have fallen to shambles after the disappearance of her father. Now, she's dedicated and borderline obsessive about finding him and her sister, and pulling their family back together.

Neutral
Talkative | Superstitious | Feminine | Repressed

Since childhood, Hikira has been charismatic and a good speaker. While she generally knows when to put a sock in it, there have been some exceptions, especially as a child. She has little boundaries and will ask people's business right off the bat (a side effect of growing up in a small town where everyone knows everyone). Hikira is quick to blame spiritual or soul entities on anything unexplainable, and can even get anxious about spirits and the curse her family might have. This fear is a driver to prove that her father and sister are still among the living. Lastly, Hikira loves all things feminine and likes to look nice, smell nice, and be pretty. Flowers are her second love after swords and metalsmithing. But don't let her fool you. Despite her old fashion ideas on what it's like to be a mare, Hikira will not tolerate being looked down on for being 'girly'.

Negative
Emotional | Naive | Closed-off | Ignorant | Insensitive | Anxious

High highs and low lows, Hikira doesn't do anything unless there is passion and feeling behind it. The Master is still young, and is surprisingly, underneath her both exterior, quite worried about her decision-making skills... Especially in regards to her apprentices. She also had to take on the responsiblity of adulthood, which was passed to her when her father disappeared. Hikira is very much still that child she was before, but now she attempts to repress her talkative, childish side in exchange for a more serious tone (one that she doesn't think quite fits her). She doesn't share her worries with anyone, and it makes it hard for her to express herself correctly, or to find help before she blows up. Hikira is easily offended, and very set in her ways. She isn't receptive of new gen ideals, given that she grew up so far from them all her life.

|| History ||

Pre-Birth (??? - 1677)
Our story goes way back, to the gods' war. At the time of the war, Breim had established a unique culture. One of the trademark characteristics of said culture was how it raised and nurtured it's warriors. True masters of the blade were respected, and their artistic skill in both creation of weapons and use of them was something to be seen. The Blade Masters were independent of the governing body, yet held loyalty to the sovereign in the style of feudal samurai, and followed a strict code of honor. When word reached them of the Kirin's march on Sirith, the Masters and Apprentices gathered together to defend their country... but they would never get to put their skill to the test, for Sirith was decimated in one foul swoop by the Gods themselves. After the destruction of Sirith, a few battle hungry kirins remained, and thus many of the best Masters stayed to fight. Most lost their lives. Those that survived the gods war ventured below ground with Jin to discover their new home, deep in the tunnels.

It took some years after the establishment of Nariah for horses to begin exploring the tunnels, but settlements below ground began appearing throughout the Labryinth as time marched forward. When there was a discovery of a wealth of metals to the east, a proverbial 'gold rush' began in the Briem herd. Isoba (more commonly known as The Hall of Echoes) was at the center of it all, and was the only viable place in the dark tunnels to establish a small city. There was just a bit of sunlight to determine night from day, and enough space for miners to make it their home. Even after the other makeshift miner settlements bled dry and dissipated, Isoba remained, even to this day.

Not far from Isoba is Argus' temple. Some chance guesses of why it is Argus' temple is located so far in the Labyrinth. One hypothesis is that the miners discovered the gem-roofed cavern, full of wisps and magic, and felt Argus' holy presence. Other say it is just above this site, not too far from Shadow Point, that the Argus himself sent Jin into the dark to discover their new home.

All within the first few years of the mysterious cavern's discovery, the greatest temple to Argus was erected, the closest city, the Isoba, supplying much of the raw materials needed for the shrine.

The temple needed a keeper. A guardian to tend the flames and make the dangerous voyage monthly in order to ensure the temple was kept clean, safe from tomb raiders, the magical fire kept lit, and the altar prayed on. One of Breim's finest Blade Masters volunteered for the task. By stationing herself in Isoba, her forge would be close to a constant supply of raw ingredients, and she the prospect of protecting a shrine so great and worthing of her capabilities. She established herself in the Hall of Echos, and to this day the Master's Compound sits at the center of the town, surrounded by magical vegetation and directly in the sun from one the cavern skylights. As time went on, fewer Blade Masters passed on their art, as the need for blade wielders lessened. Some even began to scorn the old traditions as violent, and counterproductive to Breim's normally pacifist easy (III. No being shall harm another being; those that do risk forcible banishment from the herd or death). Despite this, Isoba, isolated from Nariah and other big cities, remained unchanged. As Master pasted on lessons to apprentices, the skills to craft swords still carried, but in order to sustain themselves, blade creation was soon in addition to the general crafts of metalworking. While Master's still trained their apprentices in the code of the warrior and weapon use, they also focused on all types of practical metalsmithing.

While Hikira may not be related to the first Master Kajiya, many families in Isoba stretch far back in time. Isoba is apart of Hikira, just as the Masters' will always be a part of Isoba.

Foalhood (1677 - 1690)
In the 1,000 years since Argus left his creations to their devices, the Hall of Echoes had become a rather notorious section of the Labyrinth. Strongly aligned with the Old Generation (as frequently 'new' thinkers wanted to avoid the deepest depths of the caverns), the town developed a sort of bizarre culture and fascination with the Arcane. Very few outsiders bother to visit the town, and even fewer decide to live there.

Many in Isoba believe in the heightened activity of spirits. Miner's disappearances are often attributed to being led astray by demons or ghosts. Travelling the tunnels to Nariah or to the Shrine often meant brandishing a spirit mask to protect oneself from attracting malicious spirits. The desolation of the tunnels makes them all the more appealing to mythical beasts, after all...

Hikira's father, Gin, was an apprentice to the Master Kajiya at the time of her birth, though his father before him had been, like many, had been a simple miner in Isoba. Hikira's mother was a Keeper, a simple woman who ran an inn in the village for miners and travellers alike.

Hikira grew up with her family, living in her mother's inn. Hikira was Gin and Tora's second daughter, the first being Kyouko, and they couldn't be happier with having a second daughter. Only a few years after her birth, her parents had another pair of daughters, twins named Eiko and Kimiko. Hikira found that as a middle child, she was frequently given free reign of the Hall of Echoes, as her mother was busy with the younger children, and her older sister decided to become a healer and spent her days training. And of course, Gin was almost always at the Master's quarters, learning under the Kajiya.

It didn't bother her much. Hikira was imaginative and friendly. When she wasn't in class learning, she was spending time with the miners or other few residence of the Hall of Echoes. She was talkative and wild and well known throughout the town. She loved the Master's gardens, and if you couldn't find her running around town, you'd find Hikira watching the smiths create and practice sword fighting from the shade. She would frequently bother apprentices to show them her newest dance, or braid flowers in their tails. She knew them all by name and face.

Until one day, a colt she didn't recognize showed up at the Compound's doors, asking to be taught. A half-breed, angry and violent. Hikira remembers the day like it was yesterday.

She was 6, and he was 12, the same age as Kyouko. She didn't think much of it the first day, when the Master turned the boy away. When he returned again the next day, Hikira was in the gardens to witness what befell. The stranger challenged one of the younger apprentices to a fight, and brutalized him. Frantic and in panic, Hikira ran into the dojo, a forbidden space, to grab her father. Gin rushed outside to watch, small Hikira tucked between his legs. Gin watched, eyebrows scrunched, but made no move to intervene until the sight of blood shocked him from his calm. Hikira remembers being jostled as her father leapt forward, and Hikira remembers feeling the searing heat of Doev's one good eye on her, boring a hole into her and making her feel quite small. He was a beast and fought like one. Her first impression of him was that he would sooner eat her alive than befriend her.

She didn't know what Gin discussed with the master, but by the end of the day, Doev would be going home with her and Gin. The parentless colt had been given a place as an apprentice, specifically under Gin's watch. In such a way, Doev slowly integrated into the family, and though Hikira and he would have arguments, as the years passed Doev softened, and Hikira grew in strength. Eventually, she grew to love instead of fear him, and call him brother instead of beast.

Outside of her immediate family, Hikira also had an aunt, who was chronically ill. Hikira's oldest sister had chose her profession for that reason: to figure out and cure their Aunt Faith's frailness. Kyouko was quite close in age to Faith, and in turn was much closer to her than Hikira was to her aunt. Plus, a child doesn't think much of illness when they can't begin to fathom death. Their aunt was so happy all the time, and so so sweet. There was no reason for Hikira to worry.

One of her aunt's close friends, Eowan was one of the first horses that Hikira could remember, and to her, was practically one of the family. There was even a case of when she got lost in the tunnels around the village, and Eowan was sent to find her.

When Hikira was 9, however, her young aunt passed from her mysterious condition. The young filly could hardly understand the loss, but she did understand her family's sorrow. Stricken with guilt, Kyouko left for Nariah, looking to improve her healing ability. In the first few years, Kyouko would write letters... but over time her family heard less and less word from her before she eventually fell silent. Hikira was distraught. Growing up, Kyouko and Hikira had been inseparable, especially when the pair were still in school together, and before Kyouko had begun her Healer training. Something terrible must have happened for Kyouko to suddenly vanish into thin air. Why else would her sister so easily leave her? Some in Isoba whispered about the family being cursed. First the aunt, then the daughter? But Tora and Gin convinced Hikira that the spirits were not against them. Sometimes, things like this just happen.

Sullen, Hikira spent more and more time with her father. Suddenly thrust from middle child to eldest of Tora and Gin's blood children, she was frightened by the responsibility she felt towards Eiko and Kimiko. Meanwhile, Tora's focus on her younger siblings caused her to be drawn to her father. Hikira avoided her home during the day, preferring to spend the hours with her father at the Master's Compound. While she wasn't allowed in the sleeping quarters, the forge, or the dojo, she was allowed to hang around the gardens, where she would watch the apprentices and father work.

The Daughter of a Smith (1690 - 1699)
When Hikira was 10, she got to witness the rise of a new Master Kajiya. A ceremony where the Master Kajiya choose their successor, the ritual practice consisted of a duel. The apprentices had to create their own sword, and use it to beat their fellow apprentices in a fight. The technique of the fighting and of the smithing were both important... if the current master saw a flaw in either apprentice, it was very possible that he would choose no successor until one was ready.

And Hikira's father, Gin, won.

It was the first time Hikira had witness fully trained apprentices fighting with their swords and she was entranced by the smooth motions and the beauty of it all. She begged and pleaded to her father to teach her. The new master tried to warn his daughter that it was more than just swordplay. Becoming an apprentice was hard work, and the teachings became the backbone of your daily life. But Hikira thought she was ready.

Gin took her on as his apprentice, alongside Doev. The stallion who had been Gin's fellow apprentice, and who had lost the Master position, left the Hall of Echoes for good, his personal shame about losing greater than the dishonor he felt by deserting the compound. Hikira became Gin's first apprentice as Master, though many would follow her, and many would quit.

When Hikira was 11, and a full year into her apprenticeship, Tora and Gin had another child, Benjiro, a small fragile thing that Kira was instantly protective over. It was with a sad heart that the sister realized that Kyo, her eldest sister, didn't know about their new brother. Even when Tora and Gin tried to write, they never got an answering letter.

Becoming Master (1700)
Hikira studied for 14 years under her father. She was a fast learner, and an even faster fighter. The lessons were in more than smithing. They were in everything: philosophy, battle tactics, meditation...  Gin insisted that one had to be as sharp as the blade they could craft.

Hikira was one of 4 apprentices under her father. There was a stallion older than her age, who had trained with Gin under the previous master; one a bit younger, Shiro, who'd come from beyond Isoba; and Eiko, Hikira's own sister, who also decided to follow in Gin's footsteps. The many hours she spent training caused Kira to bond with fierce loyalty to her fellow apprentices. She didn't want to admit it, but in that time, Kira became amazingly close to Doev and Eiko, because of their shared occupation and time. It didn't mean she loved her other siblings less, but Doev, Hikira and Eiko understood each other better, and lived through the same teachings. When Hikira felt the path she had chose was wrong, she would ease her mind with the fact that even though it felt lonely, she always had Eiko and Doev.

When Kira was 21, Tora and Gin had their next and final child, Faith, who Tora named for her sister. 7 children total. Kira, older now, helped more with the care of Faith when she had free time, and spent the rest of her hours training.

It was after this that Doev confided in Gin about his abusive real father, and told the Master that he was going to leave to right his dad's many wrongs. Doev promised to write when he dealt with the situation. With that, Doev left, and Gin withheld the information about his location from his children until he could decide how to address it...

But Gin disappeared. The master of the Hall of Echoes, who was tasked with taking the journey to the shrine, never returned from one of his runs. The apprentices waited... and waited. Hikira and Eiko didn't want to give up hope, but the oldest apprentice, Natsuo, saw an opportunity to take Gin's place. Natsuo was in his late 30's, and the only reasonably aged apprentice to take the Master's position. Still, there would have to be a battle of skills for the Compound and title, and Hikira was offended when Natsuo pushed the other apprentices to believe their father wasn't coming back. His eagerness unsettled something in Hikira's heart, and her loyalty to her father prevented her from allowing him to rise up unchallenged. Meanwhile, Eiko was much to young to participate and with Doev gone not long before, there was no one else. So it came down to Hikira, Shiro, and Natsuo.

Fueled by rage and grief, as well as her skill, she came out the victor.

Natsuo, enraged, retreated Isoba immediately. Shiro, on the other hand, was happy for his fellow apprentice. Eiko also seemed proud... but all Kira could feel was panic. She had felt trapped before... but now? Now she was a Master, and would have to be for the rest of her adult life. Was she ready for such a responsibility? Did she want that responsibility? She became angry at Doev, who was the oldest and longest trained of the siblings. Why wasn't he here? Not just for the battle but now he wasn't there for the families loss? Hikira felt betrayed, no knowing where her brother had gone, and silently the two oldest remaining siblings, who had once been so close, began drawing apart.

As was customary, Hikira travelled to Nariah alone to meet the Royal Family, who were to congratulate her on her new title. It was her first time acting like a master, and it felt... wrong.

The Miyamoto family never gave up hope that their patriarch would return, and tried to stay optimistic. The apprentices continued to train, and Tora's youngest helped her run the Crystal Inn. But after a year of rumors about the family's curse, and their father still gone, Tora began falling into a depression that she attempted to hide by raising Faith, and focusing on her Inn.

The Thieves (Chapter 1)
When the tunnels collapsed to the Great Shrine, everyone in Isoba felt the quake. As soon as it was over, Kira took her apprentices and went to investigate, only to find that the tunnels were totally blocked by huge rubble. She could no longer make the commute to tend to the temple... and the people of Isoba began rumors about if this was another part of her family's curse. Try as they might, over the next few months Hikira and her apprentices couldn't open the passage for fear of both more collapse and just limited strength.
To diverge from marked tunnels was against the laws of Sirith. Hikira began writing in an attempt to find an earth manipulator, but came up empty handed.

Doev, meanwhile, was beginning the first leg of his journey in stopping his father's secret trade syndicate. Kimiko disappears after her brother, much to Hikira's fear and annoyance. She writes to Doev to keep a close eye on her.

Meanwhile, Hikira notices her mother begin to succumb to her losses, and the eldest remaining child juggles keeping both the Compound and the Inn afloat. She tells her wayward siblings nothing of this. Frustrated and obsessed with her father and sister's disappearances, Hikira prays to Argus for guidance, until he approaches her one night when she is tending to the Great Temple. Here, he offers her blessings to help her, and Hikira asks for Mediumship, in order to discover if her father or sister are truly dead.

Her new blessing is announced upon her return. As the Master, Hikira was already looked at as the pseudo-leader of Isoba, but after her blessing, people begin approaching her for advice on pretty much everything, especially with questions about spirits.

The Fires (Chapter 2)
The Aodhians brought peace offerings after the new Emissary positions are announced. Again, Hikira is far from the conflict when the explosion in Nariah takes place, but when she hears about it, she writes to Doev and Kimiko to see how they are. She considered going to the city herself, but without Kimi and Doev around, she was busy both helping Tora run the Crystal Inn and helping her raise Faith (not to mention train her apprentices).

Eiko began to become even more rebellious than usual after her twin's disappearance.

She hears news that Doev is a contender for the King's Guide position. He apparently raised a lot of support in Nariah. Isoba citizens, usually so far from the Nariah, hardly cared for elections, but when word got out that one of their own was capable of being elected, there were many who sent in ballots for the election, including (though she'll never admit it to him) Hikira.

The Kirins (Chapter 3)
Duties continue as usual, and it takes a while for the news of the Kirin appearances to reach Isoba. When it does, it is in a letter from Doev, who tells Hikira about a public forum being held by his fellow guide, Nuriko. As the Master is generally seen as the leader of Isoba, Hikira makes the announcement about the Kirins and confirms the rumors that were circulating. She decides to attend the forum in order to represent her people, and takes her little sister, Eiko, with her. The pair arrive in Nariah and were given housing at the Palace.

Eiko is left in their chambers while the forum takes place. It is here that after almost two years, she meets Doev again. ((MORE TBA AS RP CONTINUES))

Afterwards, she drags Doev back to their rooms to reunite with Eiko...

The Golem (Chapter 4)
• The King writes to Kira explaining how he's coming to help open the passage to the Shrine
• Skeptical, Kira meets the king and his envoy: Dionysus and a donkey guide Ozzer
• At the cave in, the king reveals a lindworm golem relic, which Dionysus communes with and summons the beast
• Destroys barricade and disappears again into the tunnels
• They discover that the crystal in the center of the shrine has been damaged

The Artists (Chapter 5)

The End
Kira is lost during the cave in. No one can find or retrieve her body.

|| Religion ||

Patron God(s): Argus
Secondary God(s): Kaia for her earthly metals, Ignacio for his fire

Synopsis:
While Hikira believes in the gods, she's more spiritually aware than religiously aware. She is superstitious almost to a fault. After her father's disappearance, it has become her responsibility to make the trek to Argus' temple every few weeks to tend to the fire at the shrine. The gods are viewed more as distant allies than actual deities, but because of her strong belief in karma, Kajiya makes sure to pay respects.

Extra:
• As with most horses in the Hall of Echoes, Hikira dons a spirit mask to ward off malicious spirits in the tunnels
• A small statue of Argus resides in the master's quarters, and is free for anyone in the town to pray to. Around it are candles that must be kept lit all the time; a miniature tribute to the larger temple further in the tunnels

DETAILS ON ISOBA
Summary:
A small cavern in the North tunnels of Sirith. The village is mostly made of mud and stone, and because of it's history with the forge, mostly fireproof. Like Nariah, an ancient magical barrier surrounds the town, providing a faint purple glow and oxygen/light for the village. Because of Isoba's history with the forge and fires, the culture there is unique in that many horses are cautious of fire, but are not fearful of it. There are glass hanging lights strung along the streets that were imbued with fire magic long ago. There are 5-10 families that remain in the village throughout the year. Many new faces come and go, however, due to seasonal travelers, monks, and short-time mine workers. Isoba is viewed as otherworldly and slightly spooky due to their acceptance of fire, belief in spirits, and their distance to all other settlements.

Masks
• The wearing of Spirit Masks is NOT something unique to Hikira and her family; it is part of Isoba culture
• Masks made of metal by the metalsmiths are expensive, but more common folk can make them from clay or anything else
• Frequently resemble a spirit of some kind, to 'trick' wandering spirits into believing the wearer is not a threat

Master's Compound, Dojo, and Garden
• The compound takes up a good portion of the tiny cavern in which Isoba is nestled
• Has rings of walls, within the first is an elaborate garden that is open to the public, with a pool that is fed by stalactites far above inside the next ring is the training grounds and other private rooms, such as the apprentices rooms. The last ring protects the master's quarters and the shrine to Argus.
• The gardens also include a pair of rock/geode gardens with beautiful crystals

The Crystal Inn
• Owned by Tora, the inn is open for food for permanent residents, and rooms for short term residents
• Originally owned by Gin Miyamoto's family, when Gin met Tora on a trip to Nariah he brought her and her sister to Isoba when they married. They gave her the inn to run when the owner retired
• Only Tora, her children, and their many cousins provide the manpower for running the inn

The Miyamoto Family
• Paternal side of the family, while it is no longer remember, the children of the first Master
• Family crest is pictured above
• Ask about joining!
• Family tree -> TBA
